PDC08 News: XAML in .NET 4: XAML2009 & System.Xaml.dll

At PDC 08, Daniel Roth and I had a great time sharing info about the next wave of XAML goodness coming to .NET 4.

http://channel9.msdn.com/pdc2008/TL36/ has the full video (also the powerpoint is downloadable)…about 60 minutes of presentation and demo and then 15 minutes of questions and answers on the recording. 

1) XAML 2009 – new features coming to the XAML language

2) XAML Data Model – O-M-V + Types

3) New system component – System.Xaml.dll (System.Xaml CTP coming in November 2008)

4) XAML Ready Frameworks in .NET 4

  • Continued great support in WPF
  • Much improved XAML support in WF/WCF

There is improved localization planned for WPF 4.0.

Will that include the ability to plug in custom resource providers, e.g. should we want to supply the localization information from a database, rather than from pre-compiled assemblies ? In a clickonce app, it's a lot easier to update the database than ship new assemblies.

I Rob could you post the link to download the powerpoint presentation.

Does Microsft as any plan to publish benchmark in regard of Xaml Loading issue?

The slides are downloadable from the channel9 link mentioned above.

We likely will eventually publish some perf benefits that most people will see.  Not with current bits as we still have more work to do :-) (and we've had some recent regressions that will likely still be in the CTP).

Hi, Rob!

I loved the talk you did on XAML 2009 during the PDC, but I'd like to tag along with the two comments above; November is long gone and I still haven't found any XAML 2009 CTP... I know it can be hard to stick to the dates - especially in these early development cycles - but do you have any thoughts on when we might get our hands on the CTP?

Hi, I'm designing an Mobile Application that needs to be very flexible, and whoms UI will change very often. This is cumbersome with the VS WinForms Designer. It would be great to create the WinFroms UI with XAML. I think this should be possible, and I found an article about it on the net: http://anoriginalidea.wordpress.com/2007/12/13/weird-science-defining-winforms-in-xaml/ . But XAML is not on the Compact Framework. Is it possible to port XAML 2009 to the Compact Framework and use it for declarative UI Programming with WinForms?
